Volkswagen Reports Sales Increase For June

Volkswagen Eos

Besides Honda and perhaps Suzuki, there aren’t going to be too many automakers reporting a rise in U.S. sales for June 2008. Volkswagen, however, can be named among the shrinking few, as it announced today that sales were up 0.3% over June 2007.

In fact, Volkswagen recorded their best sales month in nearly two years, coming to close to what they sold in August 2006. For the month, VW sold 23,137 vehicles, which is helping keep VW ahead of last year’s pace by 0.6%.

In most normal years an increase of less than one percent wouldn’t get noticed. But, this isn’t a normal year. Likely, later today we’ll learn that sales for GM, Ford, and Chrysler tumbled by 20-30%, with even Toyota seeing a sizable month over month decrease too. The reason? Too many larger vehicles and not enough fuel efficient cars to go around.

For Volkswagen, the Passat Wagon was the star for the month of June, selling 25.9% more of these vehicles than in June 2007.  Even the low volume Eos is selling well, reflecting a 14% increase over the same period.
