Various Opportunities, Volkswagen Manufacturing Plant
Volkswagen Group of America | Chattanooga, Tennessee
Description:
Volkswagen of America, the first foreign car manufacturer to have a plant in the US, will bring manfacturing back to the states when its new assembly plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee goes online in 2011. The automaker operated a plant in New Stanton, PA from 1978 to 1988 where it produced the VW Rabbit. During those years sales of small, economical cars were quite low, which meant that manufacturing demand was low. Operating at about one-third of capacity, VW decided to shut the plant down while continuing to import cars from Germany.
Fast forward to 2008 and Volkswagen announced that they would once again build cars in the US, settling on a location near Chattanooga to put up a new plant. That plant will assemble a not yet designated midsize car for VW, a model designed specifically for the US market. Likely, the car will share the same platform as the Jetta, but be built to American specifications. VW says that 2000 people will be employed directly by the automaker at its new plant in which it will invest nearly one billion dollars. Annual capacity is expected to be around 150,000 units.
