Volkswagen Sportwagen

The Volkwagen Jetta Sportwagen, a vehicle based on the Jetta sedan, is now available in VW showrooms.

The new Jetta SportWagen will be offered in three engine choices including a 2.5-liter, 5 cylinder engine (170 horsepower and 177 lbs.-ft of torque); a 2.0-liter, turbo-charged, 4 cylinder (200 hp and 207 lbs.-ft. of torque) which will be available later in 2008; and VW’s all-new 2.0L clean diesel engine (140 hp and a236 lbs.-ft. of torque). Base price for the 2.5L Jetta SportWagen is $18,999 with the diesel model priced at $23,590.

Cargo room for the wagon is plentiful at 32.8 cubic feet or 66.9 cubic feet with the rear seat folded down. In addition, there is an optional fold-flat front passenger seat that provides even more cargo space. A fold-flat front passenger seat is available with “V-Tex” leatherette seating.

Volkswagen’s Prevent and Preserve Safety System(TM), with over 40 standard safety features including 6 standard airbags and optional rear side airbags are among the chief features of this new model. Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP) is now standard across Volkwagen’s entire 2009 line up.

Also standard is Volkswagen’s carefree maintenance program, which features no charges for the scheduled maintenance described in the vehicle’s maintenance booklet for the length of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty-three years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

Volkswagen’s new line of diesel engines are a welcome addition to the automakers fleet. However, the premium price for the TDI model and extra 60 cents or so per gallon of fuel makes it hard to justify it over a gas model.
